Johnny Cernosek

July 19, 1933 — April 18, 2022

Johnny Frank Cernosek, age 88, of West, passed away early Monday morning, April 18, 2022 at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco. A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Rev. John Boiko as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, conducted by the West Veterans Honor Guard. Johnny was born July 19, 1933 in West, the son of John and Anne Mae (Karlik) Cernosek. He was a graduate of St. Mary's School and was a 1950 graduate of Aquilla High School. Johnny proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and upon his return, he received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1961. On August 29, 1959 he was united in marriage to Jeannette Podsednik in Garland. Johnny was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. He was also a member of Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post #4819, American Legion Post #478, Catholic Life, Knights of Columbus Council #2305, First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, and St. Mary's School Alumni Association. He was an engineer for Lone Star Gas Company for over 33 years before retiring in 1994. Johnny enjoyed hunting, woodworking, playing taroky, helping with activities at West Rest Haven with his brother C. W., drinking coffee with his friends at Kolacek's Bakery and Village Bakery, Bar-B-Queing at the West Fire Department Cook-Off with the Knights of Columbus, and watching the grandkids playing sports. In his younger days he was known for pitching fast-pitch softball from Florida to Japan and many parts in between. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jean Marie Cernosek; a grandson-in-law, Tony Ferrara; and brothers, C. W. and Edward Cernosek. Survivors include his beloved wife of 63 years, Jeannette Cernosek of West; his children, John David and Sheila Cernosek of Royse City, Theresa Cernosek of West, Kathy and Kenny Harmon of Springtown, and Bernard Cernosek of Navarre, FL; his grandchildren, Amanda and Cason Landrem, Stacey Norton, Jacob Cernosek, Jhodi Ferrara-Wicker and husband Ryder, Mendi and David Hume, Kenneth and Alyssa Harmon, Matthew and Emily Harmon, Hunter Cernosek, and Kaleigh Cernosek; fourteen great-grandchildren, Mason, Logan, Jackson, Brooklyn, Ellie, Caleb, Wyatt, Leona, Hazel, Evelyn, Jett, Hensley, Brock, and Emma; a brother, Bill and Edwina Cernosek; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are E. J. Cernosek, Kenneth Harmon, Matthew Harmon, Mason Ferrara, Logan Ferrara and Donald Cernosek. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association or to St. Mary's School Endowment Fund.
